Wind Load Engineering for Aluminum Curtain Walls and Windows: A Specifier's Guide to ASTM E330, ASCE 7 and Coastal High-Rise Design

By TOTTME Technical Team ยท

Wind-load specifications distinguish design pressure from test methods and project acceptance. ASCE 7, EN 1991-1-4 and AS/NZS 1170.2 determine wind actions using site, terrain and building data; ASTM E330/E330M tests a specimen under uniform static air pressure. EN 12179 addresses curtain-wall wind resistance.

What must an RFQ include?

Include the location, adopted code edition, positive and negative pressures by opening, building height, exposure, span, glass build-up, supports, anchors, movements, deflection limits and required test reports. L/175 is used in some specifications but is not a universal acceptance criterion.

Coastal and hurricane-zone requirements

TAS 201 addresses missile impact, TAS 202 uniform static pressure and TAS 203 cyclic pressure. The project authority determines the applicable approval and protection requirements. Report numbers, test scope, system configuration, glass build-up, finish and project documentation are confirmed per project.
